Accent or Not Selma Hayek is Good for Women's Self Image
Like most women, I’ve struggled with my weight and how I feel about my body. After having my baby, it’s taken over two years for me to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. It was much more of a challenge than I thought it would be. During this time, I have tried not to torture myself too much with fashion magazines and websites devoted to impossibly proportioned celebrities.
I do, however, love to scroll through the images on celebritybabyscoop, a blog devoted to celebs and their offspring. There are several celebrities on this site who have come clean about how hard they had to work to get back to their fighting weight after their children were born. With the help of nutritionists, personal trainers, and of course nannies, they put in the time and energy needed to fit back into their skinny jeans and go to work. Even more courageous is their admission that they not only feel guilty about taking time away from raising their children to work out every day, they still have to suffer the indignities of stretch marks and cellulite like the rest of us mere mortals. Jessica Alba is my hero for revealing the fact that though she got her figure back, she will have to rely on airbrushing to cover her cellulite from now on.
I Relate To Curvy Latina Women
I’ve spent most of my adult life in Mexico and Central America, where I was known as Güerita or Rubia, slang for Blondie. As a tall, blonde, I had very little in common physically with the petite Latina girls except for the fact that I had curves. I longed to have the audacity to wear the kind of clothes they did, completely oblivious to their muffin tops and back boobs.
Two celebrity mamas I adore are Selma Hayek and Sofia Vergara. These women embrace their curvy figures and don’t try to fit into the typical size nothing Hollywood mold. Not only are they good role models for curvy women, they are in their 40’s and consistently dress in an age appropriate manner. They both look like bombshells in every outfit, but they don’t go super short, or super revealing.
My Favorite Quotes From Selma Hayek
“I’m not a skinny girl. I push it. I’m at the limit of chubbiness at all times, but I’m happy at all times. Everybody has a weakness. Mine is food. If you love food and you love red wine and they put you in France, you’re in a good place and you’re in a bad place at the same time. You have to weigh yourself every day, and you have to have an alarm number. When you get to that number, you have to start putting it in reverse.”
“People say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder.”
My Favorite Quote From Sofia Vergara
“Models may look better in the dresses, but I look better naked.”
Just for the record, when I read quotes from either of these women, I hear their accents in my head.
