Buying the Right Multi Gym

You have made the decision to buy a multi gym for your home and then you see the huge range of equipment available! A multi gym is a significant purchase and so choosing the wrong one could be a very costly mistake. A Marcy MP2106 or a Life Fitness G7, compact and low cost or larger multi station with a higher investment? To ensure you make the right decision just follow this simple guide to sourcing the right equipment for you.

Budget

Decide what you can afford and stick to it. No multi gym is a good investment if it has taken up so much of your money that you cannot afford to do anything else. Keep your finances as fit as you are going to be!

Space

Decide where you are going to put your equipment bearing in mind that it needs to be easily accessible otherwise you will grow tired of the hassle and stop using it. Multi gyms are often seen as an investment for the long term to save money over a commercial gym membership but this is a false economy if you never use it! Ensure your chosen site will not obstruct the daily lives of you and your family, a multi gym should not take over your entire existence! If space is really at a premium look at models that fold up so you can store it away when not in use. Remember that you will need a significant vertical clearance for the gym so a low ceiling could be a problem. Finally measure your chosen space as an aide memoire.

Who will use it?

Consider that family and friends may want to share your equipment. If that is the case you will need to find a model that suits everyone who will use it. Look for something which will adjust to fit each person and that offers a range of exercise to suits everyone’s goals. Machines offer varying levels of resistance so make sure you buy something with a range that covers the capabilities of all potential users. If you have a beginner amongst you and your family you need equipment offering a start point as low as 10kgs and for stronger users an upper resistance to challenge them.

Fit

Make sure all of the potential users fit the multi gym. Many are designed for people who are 5ft 8 inches to 6ft 2 inches tall. If any of you are outside of this range test the model you are considering to ensure it can be adjusted appropriately. Check the ergonomics of the machine. When you try a specific exercise you must feel it in the muscles that the exercise was aimed to work on, not in other muscles or your joints. Ensure all elements of the machine can be adjusted to achieve this. Finally make sure you can all fit between the bars, some equipment is quite narrow!

Exercises

Think about why you want your machine – which areas of your body do you need to work out? Choose equipment with a good range of exercise that covers all of your requirements. Buying a cheaper model with less range could be a false economy if you have to go elsewhere to complete your desired regime. If necessary get some advice on what exercises you need to perform to achieve your goals.

Quality

Buy the highest quality multi gym that you can afford. The better the quality the longer it will last and the easier it will be to use. Make sure the machine is stable and look for heavy gauge steel in the frames. Check out how many bolts hold the machine together, the less bolts the more solid the construction will be, giving longer life. Have a look at the cables and pulleys, these should be strong and have a smooth motion, with covered cables lasting longer. Metal weight stacks last longer than plastic ones and are smoother but they make more noise! With metal the weight measurements tend to be more accurate. Look for well- padded upholstery that will keep its shape and contour pads to support your lower back.

Confidence

You should now be able to make a confident decision when choosing your multi gym. Make a check list and tick as many boxes as you can within your budget and if you are not sure about anything ask the right questions!
