Energy Drinks: Are They Safe For Kids?

In today’s world, everybody wants instantaneous gratification. The same holds true in our pursuit of energy. We think that we can just reach for an energy drink, and we will be just like Superman. So how safe do you think these drinks are? Do you know that kids have died as a result of these drinks? We are surrounded by media hype on these energy enhancers, and can find them in every supermarket, convenience store, and gas station.

This is an unregulated industry, where it is estimated that thirty to fifty percent of our youth are making use of these drinks. Little attention is paid to the fact that these drinks contain 3 times the quantity of Caffeine than Cola Drinks, and those small “energy shot” bottles have about 5 times as much.

Energy Drinks Can Be Deadly
Monster Energy Drinks have been implicated in the deaths of five people, and has become the subject of an FDA Investigation. Tragically, after drinking two cans, a young lady with a heart-condition, who was only fourteen years old, passed away. In no way are these drinks therapeutic, and do nothing to help the causes of lack of energy.

Our youth are helping themselves to these drinks at an alarming rate, with the belief that they will have increased energy, become super athletes, and shed pounds. What happens is that they impede proper sleep, making the person more fatigued, and the excess amount of sugar they are consuming just adds a huge amount of calories.

The medical establishment is warning that the unregulated dosages of Caffeine in these drinks is nothing short of irresponsible, as are the other unproven ingredients they contain. Many of the ingredients magnify the effects of the Caffeine. The end result is an increase in Heart Rate and Blood Pressure.
Adolescents with heart disorders are especially at risk. Keep in mind that many children have heart conditions that have yet to be diagnosed. Also, this is dose related. What is a safe dose for an adult is not going to be a safe dose for a child.

Warning Signs Of Caffeine Toxicity
We have to always be on-guard to notice the symptoms that our kids may be in trouble after consuming too much Caffeine. Keep an eye out for: Headaches, Heart Palpitations, Vomiting, Light Headed, Anxiety, Shaking, and a general feeling of sickness. If you notice a child with any of these symptoms after having an energy drink, seek immediate medical help.

Bottom Line
The bottom line is that not only can these drinks be harmful to kids, they can be deadly. It makes more sense to find out why your child has a lack of energy, such as a nutritional deficiency, or maybe is even pre-diabetic.
