Improving Office Nutrition:The Best Office Snacks

The Best Office SnacksTraditional office snack offerings typically leave much to be desired. In a traditional vending machine, there are stacks of greasy chips, heavily processed sweets, and mediocre lunch options. Many people do not want this kind of snacks at work, yet they continue to be offered. If you have the chance to change the typical office fare in your company, try offering healthy and desirable alternatives instead.

The purpose of snacks in the workplace is to fuel the brain temporarily to increase work productivity. Many people choose to eat what is available at the office rather than break their concentration while they are working. Some people also use snacks as a distraction or reward while on breaks. All of these are valid reasons to offer snacks in the workplace, and many offices use snack machines and vending machines as a source of income for the office as well.

In most offices, the typical snack options are the only choice. You can choose from potato crisps, pretzels, chocolate candy, sugar candies, gum, and occasionally, heat-and-serve foods. Some offices may also offer popcorn or sugar-free snacks. The problem with these snacks is that not only are they filled with preservatives and unhealthy sugars and fats, they are also not conducive to brain work.

Traditional snacks cause temporary sugar highs that then lead to crashes later. Better snacks would provide level fueling that would prevent unhealthy energy spikes and crashes.
There are many healthier alternatives to traditional snack machines in the office. Some offices choose to have food kiosks, rather than vending machines. These kiosks offer healthier options, like fruit, vegetable snacks, muffins, and a variety of other foods.

Even a vending machine can be altered to provide healthier snack choices. Businesses can purchase healthier snacks, such as dried fruit, trail mix, popcorn, and whole-grain snacks. Offices can also offer reduced-sodium, and sugar-free options in snack machines as well. Try to add foods that will boost employee productivity, such as protein-rich foods and foods with slow-release nutrients that provide even energy throughout the day.
Some offices may be able to add meal services to the traditional office fare. Meal services provide healthy food options right in the office, and are particularly popular with trendy companies and serviced offices in London and other locations around the world.

A meal service can provide real meals to employees, rather than a sugary or salty snack that will make employees sluggish and drowsy throughout the day. Even if you cannot afford a full meal service, simply offering items like fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich snacks can make a huge difference in the energy levels of employees.

Improving the nutritional offerings in the office is not a difficult challenge. Most employees would welcome the addition of healthier choices in the office. Most employees that want to live healthier lifestyles either have to bring their own food from home everyday or leave the office each day for lunch or snacks. Providing healthier snacks and food in the office will improve employee health, satisfaction, and productivity, which is a win for everyone involved.
