How To Lift Items Correctly?

Tips for how to lift heavy items safely and effectively
As a species, we have evolved to lift things. Lifting is actually good for us. Men who do not lift heavy weights from time to time often suffer from lower testosterone. While testosterone has something of a bad name for its associations with aggression, it is actually an incredibly important hormone. It has a key role to play in fertility and body shape and so with our modern, sedentary lifestyles, it is important that we embrace heavy lifting where we can.

However, most people do not know how to lift correctly and poor lifting technique can lead to injuries. Because our bodies are typically weaker nowadays, it is more important than ever before that we lift in the proper fashion as many of our muscles will be a lot less resilient than they should be.

For example, in office workers, core strength is something that is almost always lacking and even those who spend a lot of time in the gym will frequently neglect this aspect of fitness. Having stronger arms and a weak core will increase the risk of injury because the person will be able to lift a heavy weight, but will not be able to control it so well. The many small muscles which contribute to core strength are vital to prevent injury.
Before attempting to lift a heavy item, you first need to assess the situation. Is it something you should be lifting on your own? If not, you will need some assistance or possibly even some sort of lifting device. If they're available, use them. Also make sure that you have a clear path to where you're trying to take the item.

When you're ready to lift, plant your feet about shoulder width apart and bend with your knees, not with your back. Your thighs are considerably stronger than any other part of your body and this will also help you keep the item close to your body, which will minimise the chance of injury. Keep your back straight and if the item feels too heavy, don't be afraid of asking for assistance. It's better than damaging part of your body, which is a very real risk. When moving the item, avoid twisting as well as you this causes you to rely on minor muscles which may not be up to the job.

Lifting is good for you, but only if done correctly and safely and within your own limitations. Think about what you're doing and don't risk your health.
