 Health and safety is extremely important in the workplace and has become even more important over the last few years. Back injuries can take a lot of time to heal and they are also the most common reason for people to take time off work. Many back injuries are caused by people failing to lift heavy objects correctly; knowing how to lift heavy objects properly means that you are less likely to develop a back injury so you won’t lose out on money because you’re off work. 

It is important though, that once you know how to lift heavy loads properly that you apply the knowledge at home as well as in the workplace.

It is not just when you’re lifting heavy items when you’re at risk of injury, sometimes lifting a small child or even lifting something which is a funny shape can cause just as much damage.

Lifting heavy weights incorrectly can cause all sorts of difficulties such as back pain, hernias and neck, shoulder and wrist pains. All of these injuries and pains can cause trouble in daily life as constantly experiencing pain can stop you from doing things that you do every day like going to the gym, driving or picking the kids up. Injuries may also prevent you from doing your job properly meaning that you are less productive so your career may be at risk.

There are laws that protect employees when it comes to health and safety and lifting which means that precautions should be taken by your employer to ensure that your working environment is safe. For example, if you are required to wear safety clothes then you should be told and if you’re required to lift then you should be taught how to lift properly; if you don’t think you can manage something that you’re supposed to lift you should either split it up into smaller loads – if you can – or ask for a lifting aid such as a chair trolley for moving chairs etc. 
Back injuries are caused when people use their backs to take the strain of the weight that they are lifting when in fact it should be the legs which take most of the weight. You should always stand with bent legs and a straight back before you lift; when you stand you should not move your back at all just straighten your knees. This may make the lift seem slightly harder but you’ll be saving yourself from future injury.
